A pill against viruses – how do we avoid the next pandemic?
A new episode is out of the podcast About Science: “A pill against viruses – how do we avoid the next pandemic?” There are antibiotics against bacteria. Why is there no corresponding antiviral drug? The pandemic has put the spotlight on the so-called antiviral drugs.
Today, we lack antivirals for as much as perhaps 99 percent of all viruses that cause disease in humans. But the drugs that are available are vital, for example against HIV. Can we develop an “antibiotic” against viruses that can prepare us for the next pandemic?
Guests: Niklas Arnberg, professor of virology, Jan Albert, professor of microbiology and infection control, and Jonas Mattsson, editor-in-chief of Forskning & Framsteg. Host: Sofie Pehrsson
