SEK 15 million for researcher leaving the USA!

In the call for proposal for SSF Individual Grants 2025 Ingvar Carlsson Award – Across the Atlantic, the Foundation for Strategic Research has decided to support a Swedish researcher returning from the USA. The grant goes to Malene Lindholm at Stanford University who will conduct research on personalized training at Karolinska Institutet.

Training is good for avoiding diseases and complications caused by aging, but 20 to 30 percent of the population receive minimal effects from training and those with the greatest need, obese people, have a smaller impact on their metabolism than others.

By investigating the molecular mechanisms of training, Malene Lindholm will map how different people’s metabolism is affected by training. The research also focuses on improving the effect for obese people by providing extra oxygen during training, as well as determining which factors in the blood control this, in order to use the results for drug development.

When losing weight with the help of GLP-1 drugs (such as Ozempic), up to 50 percent of the weight loss consists of loss of muscle mass. The research will also investigate how much strength training can improve this.

The call for applications for the SSF Individual Grants 2025 Ingvar Carlsson Award – Across the Atlantic, was aimed at researchers with a current position at an American university and who have a previous or current connection to Sweden in the form of active or previous Swedish citizenship or a master’s or doctoral degree from a higher education institution in Sweden.

SSF’s mission is to fund research of the highest quality that contributes to Sweden’s future competitiveness and at the same time promote mobility both internationally, nationally and between universities, institutes and companies.
