Summary

BX-096 Nilsson - Sparr Biological principles in Machine Vision Project Summary: Objectives, expected results, summary of the Project plan Animal visual systems are extremely efficient and operate close to what is physically possible. They are also robust and able to perform well under varying and sometimes unsuspected conditions. In the proposed project we intend to study a small number of animal visual systems with respect to their acquisition of visual information, and model the consequences this will have on the visual tasks the animals are able to perform. We expect to dramatically improve our understanding of design features of animal eyes and early visual processing, and at the same time develop novel principles for biomimetic applications in machine vision and camera design. We believe that biological visual systems have many yet unknown principles to offer for making more efficient and robust applications in imaging and image processing applications. The project is a collaboration between several researchers from the Lund Vision Group (including the Bio-partner) and several researchers from the Mathematical Imaging Group (including the X-partner). The two groups are located at close distance in Lund and share many scientific questions, although the background and areas of expertise are very different. The bio-side of the project involves intensified studies of a few carefully selected and interesting features of optics and early visual processing in animal models already established in the laboratory. The X-side will model the performance of the optical and processing features and investigate the consequences it will have for the efficiency and robustness of higher processing. The Bio-side has the skills and equipment for making behavioural experiments for confirming output performance of the biological models. The different optical and early-processing features that will be studied are related in different ways and selected to complement on another and with a strategic approach in mind.
