Summary
The objective of BIO IBD is to identify novel biomarkers for the diagnosis, therapy response and disease-course prediction within inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and to pave the way for future exploitation and implementation of these novel biomarkers in collaboration with the Swedish biomedical industrial sector. BIO IBD will bring leading clinicians, clinical researchers and basic scientists together with corporate partners. Using state of the art methods, BIO IBD will take the advantage of repeatedly collected microbiomic, proteomic, immunologic, genetic, epigenetic and transcriptomic data from treatment-naïve patients as well as from patients at treatment initiation with biologics like anti-TNF. These cohorts, symptomatic non-IBD patients and healthy controls will be followed with sampling over time. This discovery phase will be followed by assessment of biological variation of putative markers in healthy controls and validation in randomly selected subsets of patients within the Swedish national IBD registry. The use of strategic national cohorts, repeated large-scale molecular profiling technologies and integrated analyses will enable identification of novel panels of biomarkers within IBD. Collaboration with corporate partners with strong track records in bringing scientific findings to the market, and support from academic partner innovation offices will ensure efficient transfer of the findings into commercial and future clinical use.

Målet för BIO IBD är att identifiera nya biomarkörer för diagnos, terapisvar och fortsatt sjukdomsutveckling vid inflammatorisk tarmsjukdom (IBD) det vill säga ulcerös kolit och Crohns sjukdom samt att i samarbete med svenska företag utveckla dessa biomarkörer för användning inom den biomedicinska sektorn. BIO IBD-projektet ska koppla ihop ledande kliniker, kliniska- och biomedicinska forskare med företagspartners. Med hjälp av ultra moderna metoder kommer data från olika biologiska förlopp att samlas in vid upprepade tillfällen från patienter, som diagnostiseras för IBD men som inte behandlats tidigare, samt från patienter som skall påbörja behandling med biologiskt läkemedel. Patientgrupperna kommer att följas över tid och insamlingen av data till biobank upprepas. Undersökningsfasen kommer att följas av värdering av biologisk variation av identifierade biomarkörer hos friska frivilliga och verifiering av resultaten hos slumpvis utvalda patienter inom det svenska nationella IBD registret. Med hjälp av strategiska nationella urval, upprepade analyser baserade på storskaliga tekniker och integrerad bioinformatik kommer BIO IBD att identifiera olika biomarkörer som finns vid IBD. För att säkerställa att de vetenskapliga rönen kommer att omsättas i kommersiella produkter, utvecklas samarbete med företagspartners med en stark meritlista avseende detta och även med stöd av involverade innovationskontor och holdingbolag.
