Summary
The programme Strategic Network for Plant Biotechnology (SNP) ended in 2001. The ultimate goal of the programme has been to develop ”The Green Factory” as an efficient production system to support Swedish agriculture and industry. The research has been focused on the bioengineering of plant products such as starch and fatty acids to be used as new and renewable raw materials and replace mineral oil-based raw materials for technological products. In order to tailor the products to suit the requirements of companies and technology industries, detailed metabolic studies were made to determine what enzymes regulate the synthesis of the desired products. A large number of genes have been identified through proteomics and genomics and have also been isolated and cloned from model organisms.
