Summary
An interdisciplinary research programme in materials science, physics, biology and medicine. The aim has been to specially design a new generation of functional biomaterials with an optimal biological response intended for clinical use. The global trend is now towards development of dedicated biomaterials using surface coating technologies, nanometer fabrication, surface funtionalization by various chemical methods and by biomolecules and/or cell coatings and built-in drug release. Parallel to this, the surgical techniques and the pre- and post-surgical medical treatments, as well as the general patient care and rehabilitation, are expected to undergo major improvements, in a systematic approach to make the total implant systems more reliable with faster healing-in times and better overall funtion for the patient. The programme has five major projects: Optimal surface topography for bone anchored implants, Tribology of artificial joints, Screening of tissue-integrated materials, A systematic approach to improve blood compatibility of biomaterials for cardiovascular applications and Time- and functionally programmed surfaces. Doctoral student training is carried out through the Graduate School in Materials Sciences
