Summary
The objectives are to establish a high quality and in the community wide known research group within computer graphics at Chalmers. I want the focus to be on 1) photo-realistic images, and 2) fast real-time algorithms. The former targets national movie-, advertising- and CAD industries. In this field I have had deep cooperation with Illuminate Labs, Syndicate Ent and MFX. The research on fast real-time algorithms targets the games and virtual reality industries, where I have had cooperation with EON, ABB Automation Technologies, Spark Vision, Simbin, DICE and Surgical Science, including incorporation of research results into products. During my PhD studies I have always had very close contact with the industry and most of my previous research results are directly incorporated into industrial products. Therefore, it feels natural and important for me to continue to perform research that can contribute to the national industry. As a step to build a strong and sustainable research group, I am applying for funding for two PhD students during the three years to a licentiate degree. In the 3 year work plan for two PhD students, one student targets photorealism and focuses on faster generation of images for extremely large scenes (e.g. CAD models). The other student focuses on algorithms for higher realism applicable by games- and virtual reality companies. The expected results are new algorithms that can be directly incorporated into the products of local and national companies.
