Summary
Magnetic molecules and nanoparticles have received considerable interest due to their great potential as building-blocks for magnetic high-density memories and spintronic devices. The purpose of this project is to obtain fundamental information on the magnetic-property–structure dependence in nanosystems, and to develop synthesis strategies to new functional nanomaterials. The studies will include synthesis and characterization of magnetically and/or optically active molecules and nanoparticles, and the use of these as precursors in materials design. Ceramic and composite materials will be prepared as thin films, powders and porous structures. For porous composites, new knowledge will be gained on how to design the porosity in complex oxides and how to control the location of functional species in the pores. For thin films, solution based processing offers a flexible and easier to up-scale alternative to vapour deposition techniques. We will develop solution routs to known interesting magnetic materials, but also aim at engineer new classes of nano-materials and investigate their properties. The development of synthesis methods and new materials are of high strategic relevance. The project holds possibilities for new cross-disciplinary collaborations with academia and industry in Sweden, as it combines a broad range of synthesis parameters and investigating methods from physics, chemistry and materials science, and has potential applications in a range of areas.
