Summary

According to WHO, infectious diseases are the most important health problem worldwide. The common theme of this centre will be chronic infections for which no efficient cure exists including HIV, hepatitis, tuberculosis and viral associated malignancies. The direct aim of the research is to improve our understanding of the pathogenesis of these infectious diseases for the purpose of improving current treatment strategies and to develop novel vaccine candidates. The centre plans to integrate basic and clinical scientists with a background in the molecular and cellular basis of viral and microbial pathogenesis with scientists interested in innate and adaptive immunity, drug development, and vaccinology. Collaborations exist with developing/low-income countries with access to unique patient groups, allowing sampling of clinical material and clinical trials.
