Summary

The fifth generation of wireless networks (5G) will enable the vision of Networked Society where anything and anyone that can benefit from a mobile connection will be connected. This is not possible only with the evolution of current solutions but also requires a transformation in the way that mobile systems and networks are built and designed. The research on various aspects of this transformation is now well underway both at academia and industry. The work ongoing in Ericsson company has a high focus towards demonstration and standardization of 5G systems. Some of this work is already in collaboration with Chalmers University of Technology. The main objective of the proposed project is to further strengthen the collaboration between Chalmers and Ericsson within 5G research area. And in this way, accelerate the progress both at Ericsson and Chalmers in order to secure competitveness and technology leadership now when international competition is very fierce. For this purpose, design and implementation of a fully functional demonstrator of the 5G system is secured in the first year of this project. In the second year, the demonstrator is used to study and analyze the critical requirements of various subblocks. Two of the most important sub-blocks which shall be considered in more details are power amplifiers (PA) and linearization techniques. Finally, it is expected that the work is concluded with joint scientific publications and patents.

Popular science description

The mobile communication networks have been enhanced significantly during the past few decades, enabling increased data rates, improved mobile service quality, and connection of more users around the world. This has also led to the onset of new mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, novel applications and services that have changed our daily life and society by continuous mobile connectivity. But there is still a long way towards a fully connected Networked Society, where everything and everyone that can benefit from a connection will be connected. In order to get there, there is a need for transformation of mobile systems and networks by new technologies and novel solutions. This transformation has already started and will be enabled by the fifth generation of mobile networks and systems (5G). 5G is therefore very critical for competitiveness of Ericsson and Swedish industry in this new vision and transformation towards a Networkded Society. In this respect, collaboration with world-class research centers and universities such as Chalmers University of technology is required in order to secure and accelerate innovations and technology leadership withing this area. The main objective of the proposed project is to further strengthen the collaboration between Chalmers and Ericsson within 5G research area. For this purpose, design and implementation of a fully functional demonstrator of the 5G system is secured in the first year of this project. In the second year, the demonstrator is used to study and analyze the critical requirements of various sub-blocks. Two of the most important sub-blocks which shall be considered in more details are power amplifiers (PAs) and linearization techniques. Finally, it is expected that the work is concluded with joint scientific publications and patents.
