Summary

The youngsters of today will be the engineers and scientists of tomorrow if and only if we can convince them that a career in science or engineering is going to be fun, meaningful, rewarding, and achievable for them. To this means, we invite classes of students in the Göteborg region to visit the clean-room at MC2, Chalmers, and take part in a "laser mischief" demonstration. This concept has been well received by both teachers and students, and we would like to increase the volume of this activity, as well as involve more of the research personnel at MC2 in similar activities. To this means, we need funds for developing pedagogically sound visitor activities, as well as funds to cover time and materials during the visits themselves. We intend to welcome one school class per week to MC2 during the whole school year. Follow-up and further development work will set the scene for an even bigger and better program the next year, providing financing can be found. The development part of this project will also include a feasibility study for starting Nanotechnology Camps for high school students in the region. We expect to help increase the youngsters’ interest for science and technology, with the final goal being that we should welcome many of these students to studies at Chalmers a number of years later. However, if we can contribute to increasing the interest of today’s youth for any of the areas of science and technology, one of our goals will be fulfilled.
