Summary
The µ-Fab network is a national resource for micro/nanofabrication in Sweden that consists of three nodes, the Electrum Laboratory at KTH, the Nanofabrication Laboratory at MC2, Chalmers and the Ångström Microstructure Laboratory at Uppsala University. According to the agreement between the four bodies financing the network (i.e. Knut & Alice Wallenberg’s foundation (KAW), Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF), Vinnova and Swedish Research Council (VR)) the main tasks of the network can be summarized as follows: • To make available distributed, high-quality, cleanroom facilities network and associated expertise for advanced research and education to all universities/university colleges in Sweden on the same terms that apply to groups at the host universities. • To provide adequate user support for those who use the network facilities • To actively marketing the network with the goal of increasing the use of the laboratories by Swedish universities/university colleges, relevant research institutes and the Swedish business community • To actively increase cross-utilisation among the laboratories and actively broaden the utilization beyond the traditional microelectronic groups • To avoid duplication of expensive, resource-demanding equipment and, instead, to refine the responsibilities for different technologies in micro- and nanofabrication based on the scientific strengths of the respective nodes. The total budget for 2004 – 2006 was SEK 60 M. For 2007 – 2009 the four bodies financing the network are suggested to grant SEK 10 M each.
