Summary

This proposal is a coordinated effort to bring up emerging boron nitride (BN) thin films as promising and needed parts of future electronic devices, especially in logic-circuits based on sensors, transparent displays, memory and optoelectronics and device physics in 2D based field-effect transistors including charge transport and instability. The main objectives are: Enhance the fundamental understanding of epitaxial growth of BN to improve and control its quality Enhance the potential of BN thin films as a substrate/dielectric/separation layer for 2D nano-devices Propose new route for BN-based heterogenous devices on flexible substrates by exploring the integration of BN with 2D nano-materials Establish international, competitive research knowledge on BN materials in Sweden and Korea with strong collaboration. The expected outputs are: Increased fundamental knowledge of growth and characterization of BN thin films and devices development Stimulate industries of nano-electronics and renewable energy by securing high performance electronics with low-power consumption Secure core nano-technology in the world class and create new research employment for bio- and medical electronics Includes PhD studies, cited publications, invited presentations at conferences, patents and starting companies Our basic research may be transferred to industry and inspire new solutions in form of novel material and structure for devices components and new process aspect

Popular science description

Boron Nitride is a new emerging material for which all properties are yet not known and still under discussion, however many applications are envisaged mainly in the microelectronic area e.g. towards renewable energy by securing high performance electronics with low-power consumption or bio- and medical electronics based on solution process and flexible substrates. We foresee efficient transfer of knowledge between Sweden and Korean but also from academia to industry: new companies can be started or technology transfer could appears from our research laboratories to existing company as Samsung, LG or Eriksson. This proposal will further develop our productive environment in term of PhD studies.
