Summary
The main objective is to provide the applicant a unique opportunity to participate in practical industry wireless research. The project also enables the applicant to use the results from academy to industry. The focused research area is high-reliability low-latency (HRLL) wireless for smart factory. Work Plan: This project has two tasks: Task 1: Low latency wireless. To meet high requirements, we need to redesign both physical and MAC layers. We will consider practical channel model of the smart factory. In physical layer, we will study finite length communications with fading channels. In MAC layer, we will study the coordination and optimal resource allocation for lots of nodes. Except analysis and computer simulations, we will implement in FPGA platform enabling SDR capability and put the platform in factory environments. Task 2: Error control coding with latency constraints. We will study coding for practical scenarios of HRLL industrial wireless. The coding solutions will also be implemented in FPGA platform and testify in the factory environments. The applicant will spend 8 months in two years for mobility at ABB. Expected results are knowledge transferring in two direction: the applicant will learn practical industrial wireless and academy research will be transferred to industry: results include scientific publications (multiple journal articles), potential patents, trained students (Ph.D student and Master students will be trained) and platform.
Popular science description
In the project, the applicant will exchange from academy to industry, namely, ABB corporate research. The main purpose of the mobility is to provide the applicant a unique opportunity to participate in practical industry research, which he is largely insufficient. The project also enables the applicant to transfer the new research results from academy to industry. The focused research area of the project is high-reliability low-latency (HRLL) wireless for smart factory (namely industry 4.0). We will first study low latency wireless communications. To meet high technical requirements of smart factory, we need to redesign both physical and MAC layers. We will consider practical channel models of the smart factory. In physical layer, we will study finite length communications with fading channels. We will analyze and optimize multiple antenna and millimeter wave for smart factory system models. In MAC layer, we will study the coordination and optimal resource allocation for lots of control loops (sensor and actuator). In addition to analysis and computer simulations, we will implement in FPGA platform enabling SDR capability and put the platform in factory environments. To achieve high reliability, error control coding with latency constraints will be studied. We will investigate coding for practical scenarios of HRLL industrial wireless. The coding solutions will also be implemented in FPGA platform and testify in the factory environments. By the mobility and related research, the main achievement will be knowledge transferring in two direction: the applicant will learn practical industrial wireless and academy research will be transferred to industry.
