Summary
The aim of this visit is to study essential features of wireless access networks for future releases of 3GPP. It is expected that next generation wireless systems are going to be composed by a high amount of small range low power networks, such as relays, low power base stations, so as to meet these data rates requirements in a cost efficient manner. A challenging task is how to build this network featuring nodes with different amounts of radio resources, capabilities and features. In order to make choices in terms of architecture, i.e. what kind of radio resource contol algorithms to locate in which network nodes and how to connect these network nodes between them, there is a need to study radio resource management algorithms, such as resource allocation, interference coordination, power control, load control. These topics start to attract the interest of academia and standardization fora. In order to provide better end-to-end quality of service to users, there is a need for the access network ("backhaul") to be appropriately designed so as to accommodate this increased flow of data. Major expected results are: performance indication of interference management and resource allocation algorithms per network deployment scenario. Network architectures, e.g. centralized versus distributed, matching the devised radio resource management algorithms. Access network algorithms so as to accommodate the expected traffic in the devised architecture are going to be devised.
