Summary
This centre will focus on high-speed electronics and photonics. Its research is planned on a vertically integrated structure, ranging from materials, devices and circuits to systems of great importance for Swedish industry. There are four research topics identified for high-speed electronics including InP-circuits, using Chalmers’ own technology, and building practice for microwave and millimeter wave systems, especially for communication and sensing. There are three topics related to photonics: vertical cavity surface-emitting laser diodes, diffractive optics and high-capacity optical transmission. Between the two main research areas there are interdisciplinary topics like microwave photonics. There is one material-related topic for the growth of III – V compound semiconductor crystals on cheap silicon wafer, which could offer new optoelectronic components on silicon chips. The new clean-room facility at Chalmers, MC2, opens up the possibility of strengthening this position by giving access to state-of-the-art equipment for research and development in materials, devices, circuits and subsystems.
