Summary

The ICSB annual conference, first held in Tokyo in 2000, is the premiere meeting in systems biology. ICSB 2008 will bring together over 1,000 international experimental and computational scientists from academia and industry to discuss the latest development in a wide range of areas, from single molecule analysis, to synthetic biology, computational biology and more. The conference features focused plenary sessions on areas such as Network biology, Understanding and curing diseases, Cell regulation, From cell to organ to organism, New approaches to biotechnology, Principles in design and evolution, and Future challenges for systems biology. Two underlying themes run through the conference: ”Clinical and medical systems biology” and “New approaches to biotechnology and bioengineering”. Besides five full days of oral presentations, about half of the participants are expected participate directly by presenting posters displayed throughout the meeting. We also plan new types of activities such as “Arenas”, which are information booths and/or demonstrations of larger projects, software, databases and all sorts of none-commercial activities of potential wider interest, and “Speakers corners”, which are allocated places and times where delegates have an opportunity to meet and discuss with invited speakers. Previous year’s conferences have attracted participants representing academia, industry, non-profit organisations, granting agencies and venture capitalist firms.
