Summary
The project will deliver novel soft haptic materials that seamlessly integrate sensors and actuators, produced with digital manufacturing tools and solutions. These soft haptic materials will be used to create rich sensory aesthetic experiences through a design approach called soma design. A soft actuator will be developed by combining functional polymers with soft robotic design technology. Actuators, engaging users in tight action-perception loops, based on dielectric elastomers, shape memory polymers, and shape memory alloys, will be customised for modular interfaces. These soft actuators will be engineered to deliver pressure, vibration, and force. Soft sensors will be developed through the integration of optical and electronic technologies. These sensors will be modularized for straightforward assembly or disassembly with other components. HapticLab Toolkit: A kit comprising haptic actuators, sensor modules, and controllers will be prepared. We will develop a digital fabrication pipeline for the design and fabrication process tailored to specific systems, utilising modular soft actuators/sensors and the HapticLab Toolkit. This approach allows for easy assembly or disassembly of soft actuator/sensor modules.
Popular science description
