Molecular basis for the variability of mitoribosomes revealed

Alexey Amunts is one of the SSF FFL6 program participants. His research group recently had a new paper not only published, but also on the cover of the journal ‘Molecular Biology and Evolution’ about the variability of mitoribosomes.

Mitochondrial ribosomes are known to be highly variable across species, but the molecular basis for this phenomenon was not known. The analysis published in Molecular Biology and Evolution uncover a fundamental evolutionary mechanism that drives the increasing diversity. The interdisciplinary study was led by Alexey Amunts in collaboration with researchers from Georgia Institute of Technology and Harvard Medical School.
