Summary

The goal of this centre is to sharpen the competitive edge of industry by providing new mathematical and statistical tools, to support society by access to safer and fairer ways of operating, and to provide all of science with the best tools for mathematical and statistical analysis and modelling and thereby contribute to the adaptation of universities to the rapidly changing needs of society and industry. The centre will cover the areas Risk, Reliability and Quality (fatigue, corrosion, financial risk, robust design), Biomathematics (bioinformatics, systems biology, medical statistics), Computational Technology (viscoelastictiy, biology), Optimization (radiation treatment, logistics, product design) and Spatial Statistics and Algorithms (environmental statistics, microarrays, gels, drug delivery). This knowledge is of a kind which could not be generated without the interdisciplinary structure of the centre, integrating The Gothenburg Stochastic Centre, new Applied Mathematics research groups, researchers from Quality Science and the Fraunhofer-Chalmers Research Centre for Industrial Mathematics (FCC).
