Summary
Somewhat surprisingly, despite quantum physics being 100 years old, quantum information has taught us that there are still several aspects that remains to be discovered even on some of the conceptual foundations of the theory. Some of these have technological implications. The main goals of this programme are: - Study the fundamental role of information and measurement in quantum physics. - Develop quantum technologies for fundamentally secure communication (quantum cryptography) and study the physics of basic quantum communication (e.g. quantum teleportation & related protocols) - Develop enabling technologies, e.g. single-photon generation (optoelectronics in restricted geometries, micro cavities and photonic crystals) and single-photon detection technologies. - Transfer spin-offs to industry or make them into start-ups, e.g. on quantum cryptography systems or on single-photon detection for metrology in fiber optics, chemistry and the life sciences. - Provide training of students and assist the coherence of national efforts by gathering scientists from quantum information/optics, nano-electronics, and computer science. puter science.
