Summary

Structural Biology is the area of scientific enterprise that aims to elucidate the three-dimensional structure and dynamic properties of biological macromolecules (proteins, nucleic acids and complexes) at atomic resolution in order to provide a structural explanation for biological function, role, activity, toxicity, ect. Such knowledge is of crucial importance in many different areas, ranging from medical and pharmaceutical science to forestry and plant technology. The Structural Biology Network (SBNet) has united academic and industrial structural biologists from a number of disciplines (biomacromolecular X-ray crystallography, high-resolution NMR spectroscopy of biomacromolecules, near-atomic resolution electron microscopy of biomacromolecules, computer modelling of biomacromolecules). The Network funded the development of a dedicated expression laboratory in Uppsala as well as a number of doctoral student and researcher positions throughout Sweden. It has organised a mentor system for the students who were funded through the Network and advanced graduate courses and workshops on specialised topics in any of the disciplines of structural biology.
