Summary

To support internet-of-things application, radio-access networks (RANs) will need to undergo a profound redesign: Instead of maximizing the throughput of few active users (as in current cellular systems), future RANs will need to guarantee connectivity to a massive number of communicating sensors, which are active only sporadically and need to communicate only few bytes of payload. The goal of this research project is to investigate novel designs for next-generation RANs, with the aim of optimally trading between latency, security, power consumption, and number of supported devices. These designs will be tested on specific internet-of-things applications to be agreed with selected Swedish municipalities, which may range from detection of road-sign and street-light conditions to optimization of waste collection through waste-bin sensors. Finally, the most promising designs will be demonstrated in a testbed. The project has the additional goals of strengthening the collaboration between Chalmers and Qamcom within the emerging area of machine-type communications for internet-of-thing applications, which is important for the Swedish industry and well-aligned with the government digitalization agenda, of producing scientific publications and patents, and of enabling knowledge transfer between Chalmers and Qamcom.
