Summary

X-ray optics is in increasing demand due to the rapid advancement of novel x-ray sources, both large-scale accelerator-based facilities and laboratory-scale sources. Several important scientific fields would benefit from improved or novel optics, e.g. microscopy, materials science, protein diffraction, astronomy etc. This programme is focused on the fabrication and application of two major types of x-ray optics, diffractive optics and multilayer optics. Both types of optics require state-of-the-art nanofabrication facilities and expertize as well as a solid theoretical understanding of both the optics and the nano processing. The driving force behind the x-ray optics research will be contemporary applications of the optics, from biological imaging to materials issues. This includes in-house compact x-ray imaging systems as well as applications at external locations, primarily synchrotrons.
